Letters and postcards from London Bridge – join us on a discovery of an area steeped in history which is undergoing rapid change, and help us record how it feels as a visitor or resident. Gathering and sharing knowledge as we walk, we invite you to write a letter or a post card from London Bridge. A selection of these letters and postcards will be published in a limited edition chapbook.

Public, private, open, closed – who chooses where and when you tread

Much of the activity on the ground floor level of the buildings in the area has been determined by their use, and as these uses have changed over time, the spaces and routes that connect them, have fluctuated in popularity. Beyond the City boundary, and with London Bridge itself as the key access to the City, pubs, theatres and leisure dens proliferated, and over time these have been controlled by licensing.

With the renovation of London Bridge and its railway arches (in parts the ‘Low Line’) as well as the development of More London, there is a resurgence in theatre and leisure venues which has conspired to significant changes in ownership and ground floor rental values, and their uses.

We will look at where and when we can cross boundaries, and who is trying to keep whom away, both now and in the past. Inadvertently, the built environment often includes obstacles and barriers for those less able to get about on foot, and we will explore how these have been overcome.

Join Des de Moor, author of London’s Best Pubs and Bars and Andrew Stuck, founder of the Museum of Walking for this fascinating exploration of the London Bridge area.
